The Laos province of Louang Namtha shares its name with the provincial capital and is situated in the north reaches of the country and sided by the Mekong river to the northwest. Sharing borders with both China and Myanmar, the province sees a small amount of tourist traffic at the Chinese-Lao border crossing at Boten which connects with China’s Mohan.

The main tourist draw here is the Nam Ha National Biodiversity Conservation Area which protects part of an unspoiled monsoon forest. This up-and-coming eco-tourism spot has been a focus of international aid. Louang Namtha has road links with other provinces, making travelling by car the best way to get here.
