Positioned approximately 20 miles southwest of Anshun in Guizhou Province, Longgong Caves are an underground labyrinth of spectacular rock formations. The caves are also known as Dragon Palace.
After traveling by bus for one hour from the nearby city of Anshun, you arrive at the beautiful Longgong Caves, which run through over 20 hills and encompass 90 separate caves. At its largest point the caves reach 262 feet high and 164 feet wide.
There are four main parts to the caves; the Rape Lake, the Leech Pass, Dragon Palace and the Whirlpool. Boats are used for transporting visitors through the underground waterways to each of the main areas. There are also countless tracks and tunnels to explore by foot although you will need safety equipment.
An abundance of guided tour groups are available as well as low-key guides who will accompany you along the waterways in rowboats. Certain parts of the caves have been modernized with speakers playing music and colorful spotlights, which somewhat distracts from the nature experience.
Getting There & Away
Getting to Longgong Caves is relatively easy with regular buses traveling from the nearby city of Anshun, which is around 50 miles from Guiyang. Huangguoshu Airport is located in Anshun and has frequent flights to other neighboring cities including the Chinese capital of Beijing. Flights from Beijing take approximately an hour. Long distance buses and trains are also available to Anshun and can be a fun alternative to flying.
