Long Iram is a village on the Mahakam River to the west of Samarinda in East Kalimantan. It’s not far from Tenggarong by boat and is good for getting up close with jungle life and getting away from it all.
The village has a population of less than 8,000, which gives an indication of its size. Jungle trekking in the Long Iram area is the main activity, where visitors can see unique flora and fauna of the Lower Mahakam. Along with delectable landscapes are the intriguing indigenous Dayak Bahau and Javanese peoples.
Attractions in and around Long Iram include good hiking and fishing, along with orangutan reserves and handicrafts markets. Accommodation is generally basic and is in local Dayak longhouses or small guest houses. Access is by public ferry along the Mahakam.
Getting There & Away
Samarinda is the best place to access Long Iram from - you can either take a ferry there, via Tenggarong, or drive to Tenggarong and boat the rest of the way. Samarinda Airport receives direct flights from Jakarta (2 hours), as well as elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Long Iram is 400kms from the nearest major airport in Balikpapan.
