The main road of activity in Lampang is on Thanon Talad Kao (aka Kad Kong Ta), often referred to as Walking Street since the street is closed to vehicles on weekend evenings.
The history of the street stretches back to the 19th century, during the reign of Rama V, when Thai, Chinese, Burmese, and British teak merchants built substantial homes near the banks of the Wang River.
The houses along the road amply display the various architectural designs of the many different ethnicities that lived together here, and the name of the road simply means ‘Old Market Road’, indicating its former role as a street of commerce. There are many remnants of the different cultures, easily spotted as you stroll leisurely down the path.
The best time to visit here is between 18:00 and 22:00 on Saturday or Sunday, for on these days the bustling activity takes place. There are plenty of stalls set up which offer tasty (and cheap) food, a plethora of handmade crafts, antiques, and of course, souvenirs such as T-shirts and Lampang ceramics.
Although one can venture down the street any day of the week, traditional musicians also perform on the weekends, so even if you don’t want to spend money, you will be able to hear some authentic Thai music.
