Located on the southern tip of Pulau Lembata (Lembata Island) in the Solor Archipelago, this pretty village has a strong community feel and attracts visitors who want to discover the culture of Indonesia.
Lamalera is perched on the slopes of an active volcano, which last erupted in 1983 with devastating results. However, the volcano has been silent for more than two decades now, and climbing to the top provides excellent views of the surrounding area.
The people of Lamalera are best known for whale hunting, which they do using traditional duri flensing knives. Although this might sound barbaric to some, it is the main way of survival for the villagers and has been sanctioned by the United Nations as the villagers show respect for the animals they hunt by using every part in order to survive and provide for the entire village.
A number of visitors travel to Lamalera between May to October to watch the hunting. During this time the area comes alive as people wait with baited breath to see if they will be provided for that year. Otherwise, Lamalera is rather sleepy and usually overlooked by those who travel to Palua Lambata to sun themselves on the beach.
Getting There & Away
Lemalera is best reached from the city of Denpasar, which is located near an international airport which has links to Jakarta’s larger international airport. Visitors can then take a connecting flight to Pulau Alor (60 minutes) and a ferry from Kalabahi port to Pulau Lembata (4 hours).
