Lake George Travel Guide

Lake George is a tiny village located in Warren County, New York and is part of the Glen Falls area. Set on the southern banks of Lake George, it is a popular summer tourist destination for its role as the center of activity on the lake. It is also well known as a resort all year round offering skiing and ice-skating.

A stroll down the Lakefront Walkway, where magicians and clowns entertain, is a great way to kick of your tour. Nightly boat cruises and carriage rides are complemented by weekly fireworks and big band performances. Amusement parks, hiking trails, picnic areas, miniature golf courses and dude ranches provide more distractions for the whole family.

The lake itself is dotted with 245 islands and attracts thousand of visitors to its scenic shores. The area is rich in historical and cultural heritage, with museums and sites testifying to significant events in the nation’s history. A wide range of galleries cater to the artistically minded, offering fine arts, crafts, memorabilia and antiques.

Highlights

Alien Encounter Museum: is scary fun for the whole family, with its haunted house and ‘research centre’.

Prospect Mountain: soars 2,030 feet above the lake and the summit can be reached by car or on easy trails for some awesome sights.

Fort William Henry: is the site of the famous battle of 1757 between the French troops led by Marquis de Montcalm, and the defending English under Lt Colonel George Monroe.

Steamboat Company of Lake George: offers a great way to tour the lake for the whole family on three different ships.

Fort George: was abandoned by the Americans in 1777 and recaptured in 1780 after the battle of Saratoga.
