On Negros Island in the Philippines, La Carlotas is home to one of the oldest and strongest sugar mills in the archipelago. Today it serves the tourism industry as gateway to Mt Kanlaon.
Mt Kanlaon stands nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, making it the tallest peak in the Central Visayas. An active volcano, Mt Kanlaon sits at the heart of a national park that is popular with trekkers. Excursions can be arranged through travel companies in La Carlotas.
Another natural attraction in the area is Guintubdan Nature Park. Springs, waterfalls and caves are all onsite, but locals come in greater numbers than tourists. The city itself boasts a few historic sites including a prominent Romanesque cathedral and the crumbling remains of the old sugar mill.
Getting There & Away
La Carlota can be reached by jeepney, taxi or hire car from the provincial capital, Bacolod. From here it is a 45-minute flight to the large international airport at Manila, where travelers can connect to prominent cities across Southeast Asia and beyond.
