We are listing these two minor attractions together as they are right next to each other and can be visited on the way to or from Wat Doi Suthep, or by continuing a short way along Huay Kaew Road from the zoo.
Most Thais stop off at the monument to Kruba Srivichai on their way up the road to Doi Suthep Temple, as it was this monk who was responsible for building the road up the mountain and making the temple accessible to all. At any time of day you’ll see a throng of people here on their knees before the statue of the monk, making offerings of flowers, incense and candles that they buy from stalls opposite. It makes for an interesting photo even if you don’t make offerings yourself.
By following the lane that leads away from the main road past a few shops and food stalls, you’ll find a path leading to Huay Kaew Waterfall. The waterfall is not huge, but the rocks on the banks of the stream beside it are a favorite picnic spot for locals, and it’s a cool place to chill out. If you’re feeling energetic, you can follow the trail up beyond the waterfall towards the top of the mountain.
Getting There
With your own transport, head west along Huay Kaew Road until it passes the zoo and begins to climb the hill. On the left you’ll see a large pull-in area beside a gold statue of a monk, which is the monument to Kruba Srivichai. Alternatively, just mention the name to a tuk-tuk or songthaew driver, and agree a fare.
