Translating as ‘Little Long Island’, Ko Yao Noi bears little or nothing in common with its New York namesake. While it is the smaller of the pair of paradise islands perched in the Andaman sea between Phuket and Krabi that make up Ko Yao, it is the more developed of the two.
The island is one of the most unspoiled territories in Thailand, famed for its natural beauty, and is a real ‘get away from it all’ destination. Ko Yao Noi is only about 50 square kilometers in size but has a number of roads and tracks around it which are ideal for walking and cycling.
The inland mountains feature many caves with paintings on their walls, which are thought to be up to 2,000 years old and represent the many various peoples who have inhabited these islands over the centuries. Visitors can observe traditional industries on the island such as fishing, rubber planting and boat building.
Getting There & Away
Getting to Ko Yao Noi is a simple process. One-hour flights from Bangkok to Phuket can be followed by a short public ferry transfer to the island. Ferries are regular and cheap though many of the island’s resorts offer shuttle boat services. There are even seaplane connections for those who don’t fancy the boat.
