Ko Tarutao is a stunning island in Satun Province, close to Ko Lipe and Ko Adang. It has never been permanently settled and is therefore the perfect spot for pirates and prisoners. Today, not much of the prisons remain but what is left is now a popular tourist attraction.

Instead of prisoners being shipped to the island, today it is backpackers. It is popular with travelers hoping to avoid the beaten track and tourist centers such as Phuket and Ko Samui. Ko Tarutao is a small, virtually deserted island with natural attractions and minimal development. It is popular as a daytrip destination and houses one restaurant and one gift shop. However, as there are no banking facilities on the island, make sure you have enough baht before you set off.

The wildlife living in and around the island is a major drawcard. Sea turtles, whales, monitor lizards, crab-eating macaques, mouse deer and much more thrive here and the beautiful scenery that these animals call home is equally impressive. Waterfalls and nature trails abound while those wanting to take things easy will not be disappointed by the stunning beach.

Getting There & Away

The only way to reach Ko Tarutao is by boat. Most people leave from Ko Lipe pier by ferry, with services not taking long to reach the island. It is also possible to hire a longtail boat from nearby smaller islands. The nearest airport is at Hat Yai, from where a flight to Bangkok takes approximately 1 hour.
