Not to be confused with the similarly named Ko Chang, Ko Si Chang is a small island situated close to the town of Sri Racha in Chonburi Province. It’s popular as a weekend getaway destination with Bangkokians and also with tourists looking for a quick fix of sun.
Though the beaches of Ko Si Chang are not considered to be as beautiful as those of other islands in the Gulf of Thailand, the scenery on and surrounding the island is certainly picturesque and by no means unworthy of gracing a postcard. Its proximity to Bangkok also makes it an easy-to-reach getaway.
Besides beaches, the island offers a few cultural attractions, the best known of which is probably the deserted royal palace that once served as a summer residence for King Chulalongkorn until 1893, when it was abandoned during a conflict with the French.
Getting There & Away
Ferries running every hour during the day connect the pier at Sri Racha with the island of Ko Si Chang in just 40 minutes. Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport is the chief international aviation facility serving Ko Si Chang. Travelers can take taxis from outside the airport straight to Sri Racha pier or a bus from Bangkok’s Eastern Bus Terminal (1 hour, 45 minutes).
