This island in the Andaman Sea is a laid-back alternative to the lively resort beaches on Ko Phi Phi and Phuket. The island is light on crowds and offers plenty of opportunities to take it easy.
There isn’t much in the way of organized activities on Ko Si Boya. As long as you’re prepared to divide your time between reading, swimming and strolling on the beach, then you’ll have the quiet getaway vacation of your dreams.
There aren’t many cars on the island though it’s possible to rent a motorbike or hire a bicycle to get around. The best way to see the coastline is by kayak, while the coral reefs can be explored with a snorkel and mask all around the island.
Inland portions of the island are planted with rubber trees, and most of the 1,000 or so local residents are Muslim farmers. Social values are more conservative away from the resorts, but tourists will feel welcome wherever they venture.
Getting There & Away
Getting to Ko Si Boya can be tricky, but this is what keeps it quiet and laid-back. Most tourists transfer from Bangkok International Airport to Krabi Airport (1 hour) and then shuttle to Ban Laem Kruat, less than 20 miles away. From here you can charter an inexpensive boat to Ko Si Boya. It’s also possible to pay full fare for a ferry between Krabi and Ko Lanta and then disembark at Ko Si Boya, a 1-hour voyage.
