Ko Phi Phi Don is the largest of six islands in Thailand’s Phi Phi archipelago. It’s the only island with accommodation infrastructure and remains one of Thailand’s most idyllic island paradises.

The island is shaped like a butterfly, with a narrow isthmus connecting the two wings. At one of the isthmus is bustling Ton Sai Village, with an important pier and lively shopping and dining districts. Opposite from Ton Sai is Ao Lo Dalam, a peaceful bay and beach area with more seclusion than seems possible on an island this popular.

The most important activities on Ko Phi Phi Don are sunbathing and swimming, and they happen everywhere there’s a hotel and beach. Other popular pursuits include sea kayaking, snorkeling and even rock climbing on majestic limestone cliffs fronting the sea. Cars aren’t allowed on the island, and tourists get around by longtail boat, on foot or by bike.

Getting There & Away

Phi Phi Don is best reached by ferry from Phuket or Krabi, with travel time between 2 and 3 hours. Ferries dock at Ton Sai and passengers can board longtail boats for their specific destination. Recently, seaplanes have started service to and from Phuket, where there’s a minor international airport. Travel time to Phuket is less than an hour, and then another hour-long flight takes you to Bangkok’s international airport with its extensive worldwide connections.
