Ko Lanta is an island district made up from several islands and is located in Krabi Province, on the west coast of Thailand. Ko Lanta is famous for its long sandy stretches of beach and some of the best diving in the country and the two main islands in the district are known as Ko Lanta Yai and Ko Lanta Noi.
The islands are popular with families and couples alike and rather than being a destination to party, they are places to explore and relax. Scuba diving, sailing, snorkeling, big game fishing, island touring and kayaking are among the more popular activities to take part in on the islands. The twin peaks on Hin Daeng and Hin Lipe rank among the top 10 dive sites around the world and there have been regular sightings of the elusive whale shark in Ko Lanta National Marine Park.
The farther south you make your way on the islands, the less development you will find, with the beaches more secluded and private the farther you go from the main town on Ko Lanta Yai. There are many hotels, bungalows, villas, apartments and houses to rent on the islands and they range from budget to five-star accommodation. There are a few beach bars and pretty restaurants to choose from and the whole island has a relaxed vibe to it.
Getting There & Away
Krabi Airport is the closest air facility to Ko Lanta and nearby Trang has a smaller airport and a train station. There are numerous mini vans and taxis that offer transfers from the airports to the ferry pier, which take about 1 hour, 30 minutes. There are also regular boat services to and from Phi Phi and Phuket.
