Klang Valley Travel Guide

Klang Valley is home to Kuala Lumpur and the royal town of Klang in the Selangor state of Malaysia. It is famous for having been a human settlement since prehistoric times and has also been the site of many wars. It is also known as Greater Kuala Lumpur.

Artifacts from the Bronze Age have been found throughout the valley and there are many excavation sites which have unearthed a number of important archaeological findings. The Klang River flows through the valley and also through the town of Klang itself, dividing it into the north and the prosperous south.

Klang South is far busier than the northern area and is home to most of the districts local and international businesses as well as hospitals, government offices, shops, markets, parks, gardens and tourist attractions. Most residents live in the southern part of the valley and new luxury houses are being built which are popular with the locals as well as a growing number of expatriates from overseas.

The Klang Valley is famous for its cuisine with people travelling to the area from all over Malaysia to enjoy a break and to sample the local dishes on offer. The seafood dishes are among the best in the region with many famous seafood restaurants attracting people from across Asia.

As well as the food, there are also many sights, both natural and manmade on offer, with options suiting people of all ages and preferences. Accommodation is plentiful with hotels located throughout the valley. If you would rather be at the heart of the action, Kuala Lumpur is the obvious place to stay while if nature is your thing, there are many national parks with accommodation.

Getting There & Away

It is possible to arrive at all of the towns within Klang Valley by bus, train, car or boat. The country’s main airport in Kuala Lumpur is located in the valley and from here it is possible to drive, take a bus or a train to all other towns within the valley. The capital is a 2-hour flight from Bangkok, Thailand.

Kuala Lumpur: the country’s capital city can be found here and boasts many attractions and sights which will keep visitors busy for days on end.

Klang Town is the main town in the valley and home to businesses, markets, shopping centers, restaurants and bars and is a good place to spend a few nights.

Tugu Keris: this is an enormous silver keris (Malaysian crooked dagger) which was erected to celebrate the silver jubilee of the Sultan of Selangor in 1985.

Kota Raja Mahadi (Raja Mahadi Fort): was built by Raja Mahadi in the 19th century. It is not in use today but acts as a museum detailing much of the history and the bloody battles of the area.

Royal Palace: the sultan of Selangor’s royal palace is located at Jalan Istana. Check opening times in advance as the grounds are not always open to visitors.

Crab Island: this stunning island is just 30 minutes by boat from the port. It is self-sufficient, inhabited by local people and gives a small insight into the lives of the farming and fishing community.
