Located in the center of Laos, Khammouan province is situated between the mighty Mekong river and Thailand to the west and the Annamite mountain range and Vietnam to the east.

Home to the largest hydropower plant in Laos, the Nam Teun 2, the Nakai-Nam Theun Biodiversity Conservation Area is among the forest land of the province. The national protected area of Phou Hin Poun offers tourist and visitors a wide selection of ecotourism activities, such as kayaking, rafting, and caving. There are over 10 popular caves to explore throughout the province, including the Buddha cave and Tham Nang Aen cave.

Much like the capital city of Laos, many areas of the province still bear the remnants of French influence and architecture. The easiest way to reach the Khammouan province is to depart from Vientiane by bus. Five or six hours later when you arrive, local taxis can deliver you to your accommodation. Khoun Kham village and the Konglor cave area are inexpensive and popular areas for lodging options.
