Kawthoung is a small town on the southern coast of Myanmar and has a bustling port that is always full of life. The wooden pier is a great place to find fresh local food.
Kawthoung is one of the main land entry points into Myanmar from Thailand as it is a short journey over the estuary into the harbor from Ranong. The fishermen bring in their daily catches of freshly caught fish, which gets bought up and traded in the port throughout the day. There are many temples and religious shrines and in the region and the hills offer great view points at the back of the harbor.
The market is a main focal point of the town and is a nice place to explore whilst waiting for your ongoing boat or paperwork to return from immigration. The streets are full of small shops and although the town is small, it is always alive and full of local people and children going about their busy lives.
Getting There & Away
The easiest way to get to Kawthoung is on a long tail boat from Ranong. The closest airport is in Yangon, 1 hour and 30 minutes away from Kawthoung, but the roads around Kawthaung are not always usable in the rainy season. Kawthoung is only 45 minutes by longtail boat from Ranong, which is a 5 hour drive from Phuket International Airport.
