A favorite local swimming hole, Katieng Waterfall is located in a shady forest six miles (9 km) southwest of central Ban Lung.

At the entrance to the falls there are several small huts selling handicrafts produced by local tribal groups, as well as several elephants that can be ridden around the forest for around $15 an hour.

Just beyond the shops and the elephants, there is a short path that leads to the top of the falls, and just left of that, a staircase that leads to the pool beneath. Katieng Waterfall spills over a crescent-shaped precipice, feeding a large pool that is decent for swimming, though perhaps safer in the drier season when the flow isn’t as heavy. Note the small statue near the bottom of the stairs that represents a guardian spirit who resides in the area.

A few miles beyond the turnoff to Katieng Waterfall is the parking area for Ka Chhanh Waterfall; here you will first notice replica tribal wedding huts. From the huts, there are trails leading down to the falls and swimming hole (on your left) and a suspension bridge (on your right). Smaller than Katieng Waterfall, Ka Chhanh has its own charm, and the differences between the two make them a nice pair to visit in a single outing.

The waterfalls are enjoyable year round, though in the rainy season, particularly August and September, you may have difficulty accessing them along the muddy roads. December through March has the nicest weather, best roads, and still a decent amount of water to enjoy the falls.

Ka Chhanh is 4 ½ miles (7 km) from town on a well-marked road along the way to Katieng Waterfall, which is 6 miles (9km) from town. The best way to get there is from Ban Lung with a motorbike (with good directions or a map), motodop taxi with a local guide, or a minivan from your hotel.

There are signs for the falls, but that doesn’t mean you are guaranteed not to get lost or injured, particularly as the road is bumpy when dry and slippery when wet.
