Karon Beach is one of Phuket’s main tourist destinations; second only to Patong Beach farther north. It lies sandwiched between Patong and Kata beaches on the west of the island.
It’s a huge and somewhat nondescript dead straight, open beach backed by innumerable hotels and resorts. Although not particularly busy, just about all hotels are separated from the beach by a road, which can be a pain to cross. There is also not that much to do on Hat Karon although the sand and water are fine.
The northern part of Karon, just behind the traffic circle, is the busiest part, with scores of girlie bars and the like. There is not that much in the way of go-gos, luckily, which are mainly confined to Patong. There are also many bars and cafés at the southern end of the beach near Kata Beach.
Getting There & Away
Hat Karon is about an hour by taxi from Phuket International Airport, with taxi being the best way to get here unless you rent a car. Minibuses also run to Karon from the airport for a fraction of the taxi price although they are slower. The main town on Phuket is Phuket Town, a 45-minute transfer from the airport and 30 minutes from Karon.
