Kampong Thom Travel Guide

Capital city of Cambodia’s second-largest province, Kampong Thom is a lovely town perched on the banks of the Stung Saen River. Visitors based here enjoy the provincial atmosphere, Buddhist temples and natural beauty of the region.

This provincial outpost sits along an important transportation link between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh so it receives a steady flow of tourists. The local infrastructure is best suited for those on a stopover as the town has less to offer overnight or long-term guests.

Kampong Thom has its own share of attractions ranging from protected outdoor areas along the river to ancient temples dating back 1,000 years or more. Kampong Thom is a reasonable place to be based while planning excursions to these sights.

Getting There & Away

Kampong Thom is almost equidistance between Phnom Penh (103 miles) and Siem Reap (93 miles). Regular buses ply the route connecting all three cities, taking 5 to 6 hours to reach either Phnom Penh or Siem Reap from Kampong Thom due to poor road conditions. Expect even longer travel times during the rainy season. Both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have large international airports with connections to major Southeast Asian cities.
