Kaeng Krachan National Park is the largest park in Thailand and covers a massive 2,915 square kilometers of land in the Phetchaburi province. The park gained its protected status in 1981 as the 28th National Park in Thailand and is brimming with watersheds and wildlife as well a collection of granite and limestone mountains.
The majority of the park is covered in dense forest that covers the steep hills and slopes throughout the whole area. The forest is made up of ferns, orchids and hanging lineas as well as rich fruit trees, vines and larger oak trees. The highest peaks in the park sit at 1,200 meters and are 500 meters above sea level.
The animal kingdom in Kaeng Krachan National Park is a mixture of Asiatic and Malaysian species. There are over 400 bird species and 57 mammals that range from tigers and bear to otter and wild boar. There are six species of hornbills and a handful of fowl including the Kalij pheasant and grey peacock-pheasant as well as the graceful hunter, the black eagle.
Getting There & Away
The nearest international airport is in Bangkok, which is only 75 miles from the park. There are daily buses from Bangkok to Phetchaburi that take about 3 hours and there are also buses from Hua Hin that also take about 3 hours. There is a small airport in Hua Hin that runs four flights a week to Bangkok, a journey that takes 45 minutes.
