Mae Hong Son is ringed by mountains, and at its heart lies a small, tranquil lake called Jong Kham, which reputedly was once a watering hole for elephants that worked dragging logs from the forest in the region.

The area around the lake has now been prettified, and the view across it from the northern edge, with the spires and rooftops of Wat Jong Klang and Wat Jong Kham reflected in its waters, is the iconic view of Mae Hong Son.

The lake is small and you can walk right round it in 10-15 minutes, which makes a pleasant activity in the morning or evening. During the high season, there’s a night market that runs along its banks in front of the temples where you can munch on phad thai or a tasty roti (pancake).

You can walk to the lake form anywhere in the town center.
