Situated in the western region of the picturesque island of Bali, the Jembrana Coast remains a mystery to most visitors to Indonesia as they tend to overlook this spot of intense natural beauty.
However, those who do take the time to explore the Jembrana Coast will discover an entire treasure trove of cultural and natural riches. A monument to the priest Danghyang Nirartha, the Pura Rambut Siwi temple is one of the area’s most interesting and best known attractions. Just along the coast is Medewi, which is a spectacular spot for surfing, while just off the coast are a couple of tropical islands surrounded by colorful coral and fish.
There is plenty of evening entertainment to be enjoyed along the Jembrana Coast. Music is provided by the local bamboo orchestra. Near the Pura Luhur temple are an open-air pavilion and a couple of gazebos, which often hold concerts and other entertainment against a backdrop of ocean and rice field.
The roads along the Jembrana Coast are in good condition, making this a good area to explore by bicycle or motorbike. Simply zip up and down the coast, stopping at the numerous interesting villages, temples and beaches along the way.
Getting There & Away
International visitors will probably arrive at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport and take a bus to the Jembrana Coast (2 hours). Those who have been exploring the neighboring island of Java can take a ferry to the town of Gilimanuk (30 minutes).
