Jeddah Travel Guide

Gateway to Muslims making the pilgrimage during Hajj to Mecca and Medina, Jeddah was once home to the alleged tomb of Eve and the city’s name means ‘ancestor of women’. Unfortunately, the tomb was destroyed by authorities in fear of the perversions to Islam. This historical and, some would say, modern city of Saudi Arabia, is the second largest in the country. There are certainly enough museums, with the Municipality Museum being the best. Shopping is another pastime here, with plenty of souks and shopping malls.

Considered a modern city by the standards in Saudi Arabia, Jeddah boasts museums a plenty, along with glitzy shopping malls and Old World souks. Make sure you don’t miss the Souk Al-Alawi in the old city, where there are lots of exotic souvenirs to be had. Entertainment options are pretty limited in this alcohol-free country, with the Corniche lining the Red Sea being the center for night-time fun.

Jeddah is where Hajj pilgrims enter the country on their way to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, just a few hours away. While not as strict as other places in the country, women are required to wear an abeyya, which is enforced by the religious police (matawwa). Considering this, you can cross a bikini off your packing list if you intend to enjoy the clean beaches in Jeddah.
