Jailolo is a stunning volcanic complex on the small peninsula of Jailolo Bay in the western part of Halmahera Island, Maluku. It comes with plenty of geothermal activity and a nearby small island.
Not many visitors head out this way as it is pretty remote and tourist facilities are minimal. The volcano itself is of the strato type and features hot springs on the north coast, the small island of Kailupa cone to the south, lava flows on its eastern flank, and a small crater on the west.
Jailolo lies in the center of the complex, a 1,600-meter wide caldera known as Idamdehe. There is some pretty good trekking here although you will need a guide as you cannot walk everywhere. Accommodation wise, Jailolo is one of the few places in Halmahera that has some semblance of hotel and guest house accommodation.
Getting There & Away
Bus and_ bemo_ are the chief forms of transport on Halmahera Island. Coming from Ternate, the main center in the region, boats run from the harbor to Jailolo in around 90 minutes depending on sea conditions. From the pier at Jailolo, you’ll need to charter a_ bemo_ or rent a bicycle. Sultan Babullah Airport is the airport in Ternate town and receives flights from Makassar in South Sulawesi in 2 hours.
