Founded in 1869, Moscow is situated in northwestern Idaho in the rocky hills of the Palouse, only 10 miles east of Washington State University across the border. This typical western college town is surrounded by beautiful farmlands and is home to welcoming residents and miscellaneous shops. Moscow’s University of Idaho employs and enrolls more than half the town’s population.
Unlike numerous young cities in Idaho, Moscow’s colonial-style buildings and tree-lined streets conserve some of the spirit of the region’s early pioneers who settled here. Near the university, visitors will find theater companies and bookstores as well as brewpubs and coffee shops lining the streets, creating a pleasant atmosphere. Ten city parks reflect the beautiful nature of the town’s environs, and there are numerous leisure opportunities in the close-by countryside.
Various sports activities are available include boating, fishing, rafting and kayaking, but if you’d prefer to keep dry hiking, biking and horseback riding may prove to be more suitable. Moscow is also host of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, which takes place in February and is one of the globe’s most applauded yearly meetings of jazz performers. Further alternatives are daytrips to the nearby picturesque towns of Clarkston, Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston and Spokane.
