Larger than Belgium, Zimbabwe’s most popular national park lays claim to the title of having the highest diversity of mammals among all the world’s parks. This may sound like another of Robert Mugabe’s attempts to gloss over the reality of his rapidly declining nation. But in fact, if you can survive the trip into this unstable country, Hwange National Park delivers on the goods.

One of the obvious advantages to visiting Zimbabwe is that hardly anyone else does. You can watch vast herds of elephants, prides of lions and swarms of other four-legged creatures roaming the park, oblivious to the horrors around them. Since Hwange is not subsidized by Mugabe’s government, the park relies solely on tourism to stay alive, so do your part to keep this precious land out of the dictator’s hands and plan your safari to Hwange.
