Hu’u and Lakey Beach is a remote surfing destination on the south coast of East Sumbawa. It is a gorgeous beach with crashing surf although it has little in the way of facilities.

Hu’u and Lakey Beach is so popular in the surfing world that international surfing competitions have been staged here. The best of the surf is out among the outlying reefs, including Lakey Peak, Periscopes, Nangas, Pipeline, Nangadoros, and Cobblestones. Many of these waves offer long tube rides.

Those who aren’t into surfing can enjoy Lakey Beach and its turquoise-colored waters where there is some excellent swimming and snorkeling. Even for non-swimmers, at low tide you can walk out virtually onto the coral reefs. Accommodation at Hu’u and Lakey Beach is a bit on the thin side but there are options. Some guesthouses even have pools.

Getting There & Away

Mohammad Salahuddin Airport in Bima is the easiest entry point to Sumbawa for visits to Hu’u and Lakey Beach. The airport receives flights from Denpasar in Bali in around an hour, as well as from Mataram. Ferries come in from Flores in the east and from Lombok in the west, but must be followed by long bus journeys. Hu’u and Lakey Beach is around 5 hours by bus from Bima via Dompu.
