There are more than 200 picturesque islands surrounding the large metropolis of Hong Kong Island to the south of the China mainland.
Exploring the islands is quite easy as most are connected by ferries and other boats. However, most Chinese people stick to the larger islands and it can be a little difficult to get to the smaller islands, though it is possible to charter a private boat for those who want to set foot where few others have stepped.
Located just three kilometers from Hong Kong Island, Lamma is a great place to visit on a daytrip. Nearby Lantau is extremely popular as it is home to attractions such as Disneyland and Po Lin Monastery with its enormous Tian Tan Buddha, and features a number of picturesque beaches to soak up the sun on.
Those who enjoy windsurfing will want to head over to the island of Cheung Chau, which is located just off Cheung Chau. There are many beautiful beaches here and this is also a good place for hiking and dining on fresh seafood.
Many of the Hong Kong Outlying Islands are just a short ferry ride from Hong Kong Island and are generally visited on a daytrip. However, there is plenty of accommodation available on the larger islands, which are great places to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Getting There & Away
Access is via Hong Kong International Airport, which is located on Chek Lap Kok Island. Passengers can take a train to Central on Hong Kong Island (24 minutes), and then a ferry to most of the outlying islands (up to 1 hour).
