Lamai is a popular town on Koh Samui, second only to its larger counterpart, Chaweng. A one-way road system runs through the center of the town and is set slightly back from the beach, which is lined with restaurants and bars as well as shops and Thai stalls.
The beach is smaller than Chaweng but quieter and just as pleasing on the eye. The back of the beach is full of beach bars and eateries and the hawkers here are far less disruptive than those at the larger beach. There is a large amount of go-go bars and beer bars found off the back streets in Lamai as well as a lady Thai boxing ring.
There are decently priced hotels that have some of the best restaurants in town and a popular tourist attraction known as Hin Yai and Hin Tai, or Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks. They are rock formations that have been naturally sculpted by the sea into the shape of male and female genitals and attract many photo opportunities.
Getting There & Away
Lamai is a 30-minute drive from Koh Samui’s new airport and is easily reached on the main ring road that travels around the island. The 12-hour train journey is a popular route from Bangkok and boats and ferries come to Samui from the mainland and other islands everyday.
