Situated in Inner Mongolia, north east China, Hailaer was founded in 1734 as a Chinese fort. The city has been the capital of the Xing’an Province and also occupied by the Japanese in WWII.
Hailaer and the surrounding region consist mainly of grasslands and rural landscape with the majority of residents farming some kind of agriculture. Positioned close to the Russian border, Hailaer acts as a gateway to the neighboring country. You will find two major shopping centers with an array of shops and restaurants including McDonalds, Starbucks and KFC.
One of the main draw cards for Hailaer is the picturesque grasslands, which provide fun activities for visitors to enjoy such as horse riding. You can visit local farms seeing how domestic families live and learn how they make cheese and yoghurt. Also there are the Japanese tunnels and caves that were built in the 1930s and used during WWII.
Getting There & Away
Hailaer is easily reached by air with Hailaer Dongshan Airport located just 20 minutes drive from the city center. Frequent flights arrive from Beijing (3 hours) and also Shenyang on a daily basis. It is also possible to take a bus or train from Beijing and other parts of China although journey times are long with trains taking 26 hours from Beijing.
