The mountainous region of Gunung Rinjani National Park is protected by its status and the second highest mountain in the country is situated within the park as well as a gorgeous lake.

The national park is located on Lombok and is mainly made up of mountains and hills. Mount Rinjani, also known as Gunung Rinjani, is the second highest peak in Indonesia and the park takes its name from this towering active volcano that attracts many keen hikers who tackle their way to the summit and its pretty crater lake, Segara Anak.

The park is home to many endangered plants and animals including the Sunda porcupine, surili monkeys, scaly crowned honeyeater and several types of deer. It covers a land area of 413 square kilometers and there are lots of group tours and treks available for those who want to hike to the top of the mountain and enjoy the fabulous views.

Recent times have seen the park off limits due to the eruption of Mount Barujari (Son of Mount Rinjani) so check before you arrive as some treks are considered dangerous and fatalities among trekkers who attempt to reach the highest point of Rinjani are relatively common.
