Lying on the border with Central Java and East Java, the 3,265-meter Gunung Lawu (Mount Lawu) is a huge stratovolcano with three peaks which has good scope for hiking.
The mountain is best known for its climbing activities and many people will start the night before to reach the summit in the morning. There are two main routes up Gunung Lawu; from Cemorokandang in Central Java and Cemorosewu in East Java. The north side of the volcano is the most impressive, featuring many cones and crater lakes. The highest peak on Gunung Lawu is that of Dumilah Argo at 3,265m.
In addition to the trekking and views, Gunung Lawu has a number of side attractions worth checking out. The areas of Tawangmangu, Sarangan, and Cemorosewu have the most appeal in the attractions department. Check out Majapahit on the lower western slopes, where the Sukuh and Cetho temples reside.
Getting There & Away
The nearest international airport is in Jakarta, several hundred kilometers away, although there are domestic airports in Semarang and Yogyakarta in Central Java. They both receive flights from Jakarta within the hour. Highways and railways run to Sragen, from where single track roads go to Gunung Lawu. It’s best to get on a tour from Semarang or Yogyakarta for visiting Gunung Lawu.
