If you keep walking through the Buddha casting foundry run by Sgt Maj Thawee, you’ll find a gate leading into Garden Birds of Thailand, a collection of several birds found in Thailand, all trapped in cages for your viewing pleasure.

Of course, this is a much easier way to see some unusual birds than waiting in a hide in the countryside for days before one appears.

There’s a fantastic range of birdsong in this small area, and kids might enjoy it, especially as some of the birds can imitate a human’s voice in Thai and English. The many species of parrot are a big hit, particularly those that greet visitors.

Garden Birds of Thailand is also an attempt to conserve some species that are considered endangered, such as the helmeted hornbill, the jambu fruit-dove, and the black and the white laughing thrushes. However, the cage space is so small that the massive hornbills hardly have room to flap their wings, so you have to wonder whose benefit this is for.

The park is tiny so won’t take long to look around. Most people combine a trip here with a look at the Sergeant-Major Thawee Folk Museum nearby and the Buranathai Buddha Casting Foundry in front of the bird garden.

The best way to visit this place is by hiring a tuk-tuk, tricycle or motorbike rider to make a round trip, stopping at the Sgt Maj Thawee Folk Museum and the Buranathai Buddha Casting Foundry before finishing off here.
