Dumaguete sits in the southeast of Negors Island, central Visayas. It is the provincial capital and largest city in the region and is affectionately known as the ‘city of gentle people’.
Students make up a large portion of Dumaguete’s residents, owing to the sizeable Silliman University. The university grounds and the Anthropology Museum here are pretty impressive. Elsewhere in Dumaguete, the seaside promenade is ideal for a walk and there are many cafés and restaurants for a bite to eat.
If you have a fair amount of time in southern Negros, it is worth checking out the nearby towns of Bais City and Dauin, along with Apo Island. Each destination has great diving and Bais City also boasts dolphin and whale watching. Head west to the beautiful Twin lakes region and southwest for the town of Valencia.
Getting There & Away
Dumaguete City Airport is the fastest way in, with regular flights from Manila and Cebu City. Dumaguete is also home to a major port and fast ferries arrive daily from Cebu City in 4 hours (via Bohol Island). Dumaguete City Airport is around an hour from Manila Domestic Airport.
