Don Daeng is one of the main places to visit in southern Laos, along with Pakse and Champasak. It is an island within the Mekong, located inside the World Heritage Champasak Cultural and Natural Heritage Landscape.
The island is as tranquil as they come, with nice beaches and a range of good accommodation for backpackers as well as those looking for something a little more comprehensive. The main sight to see is the pre-Angkorian ruins at Tomo Temple. This important site features stone Buddha images and an ancient brick stupa.
The other main attraction of a visit to Don Daeng is the scope for getting active, with great bike riding and walking available. You can also go sunbathing on the many sandy beaches or stay with a local family in a homestay.
Getting There & Away
Buses and boats run to Champasak, from where it’s an easy trip to Don Daeng island. Champasak is around 25 miles south of Pakse, where there is an international airport with flights from all over the region.
