Doi Ang Khang is one of the finest mountain destinations in northern Thailand. Its cool clean air and lush terrain make it an ideal place to escape the bustle of the city.

The mountain is well-equipped to keep tourists busy. A small hotel and several guesthouses mean you can stay right in the heart of the scenery and mingle with other visiting Thais and foreigners. It’s especially popular in the cool season (Nov-Feb), when many exotic varieties of plants in the Royal Project gardens are in bloom, and temperatures can drop to near zero.

Trekking and mountain biking are major outdoor activities in Doi Ang Khang, but many people come here just to chill out and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. The area is renowned for its bird-watching, though the Royal Agricultural Station is the main attraction, where you can walk through a wonderland of horticultural surprises, including an English rose garden and a bonsai garden.

  • Royal Agricultural Station: Set up in 1969 by Thailand’s King, this agricultural station is a showcase of garden landscaping.
  • Doi Ang Khang: The mountain and its surrounding valleys offer endless opportunities for hiking, biking or just lolling around. There are several hilltribe villages in the area that you can visit.

Doi Ang Khang is a three hour drive from Chiang Mai. Follow Highway 107 north almost as far as Fang, then turn left on to Highway 1249. It is located in a rather remote part of northern Thailand, so renting your own car and driving yourself is the best way to get to the mountain park. Take care as there are many switchbacks on the steep route to the top.

  • Worth it? Definitely, particularly if you like walking though landscaped gardens.
  • What to do: visit the Royal Agricultural Station, ride a mountain bike or just sit on your porch and stare at the scenery in pleasant contemplation.
  • Best time to go: the cool season from November to February offers the most reliably cool and dry weather.
  • How long? A couple of days are enough to see the sights.
