The Derawan Islands boast pristine beaches and are very popular among the diving community. They are found off the coast of East Kalimantan and are the ultimate getaway for anyone who wants peace and quiet.
The main islands of the Derawan chain include Derawan (the main island), Samama, Sangalaki, Panjang, and Maratua. Derawan Island is pretty big and is classified as a nature reserve with many species of bird and fish, along with rare plants. All types of turtles as well as sea cows inhabit the shores.
The island itself is inherently beautiful with perfect beaches and a lush jungle. There are caves on the island while the water is great for swimming, diving, and fishing. Nearby Rabu-rabu Island is also known as Snake Island, while Maratua Island features a lake and many villages.
Samama Island is also a nature reserve for its turtles, while Bunyu Island (farther north) is known for its supposed gold reserves.
