Known as the ‘Coastal Paradise of the North’, the municipality of Claveria is situated on the northwestern portion of Cagayan Province and is regarded as the northernmost tip on the Philippine island of Luzon.
A four-kilometer long stretch of black and fine sand beaches sprawls along this coastal town which features several tourist spots, such as the Apo Lakay-lakay (‘old husband’), a big rock sticking out of the sea, as well as a smaller rock called Apo Baket-baket (‘old wife’), and a little rock named Apo Ubing-ubing (‘child’). According to local myths, a fisherman annoyed a sea god who turned him and his wife along with their abandoned child into stones.
Other places of interest are the remote Centinela Beach, the tranquil waters of Taggat Lagoon, and three lovely waterfalls, above all the Mabnang Falls with an artificial swimming pool at the bottom. Claveria also serves as a jump-off point to the pristine island of Fuga that is being developed into a world-class tourism and recreation center.
