The largest city on New Zealand’s south island and known as the ‘Garden City’, Christchurch is a flat, leafy place that is full of English type buildings and amazing scenery. The most famous landmark is Christchurch Cathedral in Cathedral square, and nearby is Christchurch Art Gallery.

The nightlife is a little slow, but there is a very pleasant café culture in evidence so pull up a chair and get supping. Many people use Christchurch as a stop-off en-route to exploring the beautiful beaches, rivers and lakes which are less than an hour away, but spending a bit of time here can be rewarding.
