In the south of China’s Guangxi Province, Chongzuo is a wild frontier land strewn with mountains and magnificent karst structures. Nearly half the region is forested, making it particularly popular with eco-tourists.

Chongzhuo’s hilly backcountry is a delight for nature lovers. Imposing mountains and towering limestone karsts dominate the landscape, much of which is set aside as a nature reserve. The Zhuang people, China’s largest ethnic group, are also found in this part of the country. In all, 8 out of 10 people living in Chongzhuo represent an ethnic minority.

The most popular site in Chongzuo is Detian Waterfall on the border with Vietnam. It is 330 feet wide and the water drops more than 230 feet. It joins with another waterfall in Vietnam to make one of the largest border cascades in the world. Other sites in Chongzuo include a leaning pagoda and a nature reserve with many of the 700 remaining white-headed langurs in the world.

Getting There & Away

Chongzuo is 50 miles from Nanning Wuxu International Airport. Buses and trains travel between the city in anywhere from 1 hour, 30 minutes to 2 hours. Domestic flights cover the country including Beijing (3 hours) and Shanghai (2 hours, 30 minutes). Nanning is gateway to Southeast Asia, with an increasing number of flights to hubs like Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh.
