Believed to have been constructed in the late 14th century by King Saen Muang Ma, this temple is regarded as a fine example of Lanna-style architecture, particularly the ubosot, which is located in the right as you enter the temple compound.
The temple once contained the Phra Singh, an important Theravada Buddha image, which is now housed at Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Mai, and is that city’s most venerated Buddha image. The image in the viharn at this temple, like the Emerald Buddha image in Wat Phra Kaew, is a copy.
This temple is located on Singhaclai Road in Chiang Rai and there is a reclining Buddha image at the back of the temple. The temple has recently undergone extensive restoration, in particular the ubosot, which features striking figures performing a wai on the eaves of the roof instead of the usual nagas. There are also some interesting Buddha images set around the bo tree.
At the time of research, the chedi was undergoing restoration. Beside the chedi, notice the unusual tree called a cannonball tree, named after the enormous buds that burst open into glorious pink and white blooms when in season.
