Chiang Mai’s university is a place of study for tens of thousands of students, and while it’s not exactly a tourist attraction, a wander round the ample grounds of its campus at the base of Doi Suthep (near the zoo) is a pleasant way of passing the day and offers the chance to meet Thai students for a chat.

Chiang Mai University (CMU) opened in 1964 under the patronage of the king. It was the first of its kind outside of Bangkok, and the institution has expanded to cover a range of disciplines. It has a reputation as being the best place in the country to study certain subjects such as medicine.

The area around the university also hosts a thriving restaurant and bar scene that attracts students and expatriates, especially along Nimmanheimin Road and the western end of Suthep and Huay Kaew Roads, which gives this region of town a distinctive atmosphere.

There are entrances to the university grounds on both Huay Kaew and Suthep Roads.

Take a songthaew or tuk-tuk from anywhere in the city center.
