Like Wat Analayo, Champa Thong Waterfall is quite a distance from town and somewhat tricky to find, but the effort is well-rewarded with some truly picturesque views.

It lies within Doi Luang National Park, which covers over 1000 square kilometers and straddles the borders of Phayao, Chiang Rai and Lampang.

The waterfall itself is quite tall and surrounded by lush vegetation. It is a favorite habitat for butterflies and several species of birds, so makes a good spot to settle in for a picnic. As it lies off the road from Phayao to Chiang Rai, it provides an interesting diversion for travelers heading that way.

There’s no public transport, so you’ll need a rented vehicle. Drive north along Highway 1 for about 7km, then turn left on Highway 1127 and continue another 13km to the falls.
