Cavite is a province best known for its rich history and being the birthplace of a surprising number of Filipino national heroes. Many locals refer to Cavite as the ‘Land of the Brave’, or the ‘History Capital of the Philippines‘.
Cavite City may not offer much to the traveler, but it is near the interesting town of Tagaytay, which is a must-see for any visitors to the area. Lake Taal and Taal Volcano are also very close by and well worth a visit.
Many visitors come here to enjoy the excellent horseback riding in the countryside. Picnic Grove is the best place to go to hire a horse and guide for the day and get into the backcountry. It is just 35kms south of Manila, making it a popular weekend getaway for city dwellers.
Cavite also has a long history as a strategic point for military defense. The Americans established Sangley Point Naval Base during WWII to act as their base for naval operations in the region. Its history stretches back to Spanish colonial days, however, and remnants of this heritage can be found scattered around Cavite City and other towns in the province.
Getting There & Away
Cavite is just 35kms south of Manila (home to the nearest airport), so it is very easy to reach from the city. Buses run several times throughout the day to Cavite City, the capital of the province. The province is also easy to get to by car if you want to rent your own vehicle and drive yourself.
