Catangnan is a sub-district (or _bangaray) _of General Luna on Siargao Island. Its official stake in tourism is Cloud Nine, a favorite reef break among international surfers.
Cloud Nine gets lots of publicity, with its thick, hollow barrel regularly featured in surfing magazines. While Cloud Nine is one of the best breaks in the Philippines, it still has plenty of competition on-island. Catangnan has several other right-handed and left-handed breaks that are within a short boat ride of the shore.
General Luna is the accommodation center of the island, with mid-range resorts and a few rock-bottom budget guesthouses. The only real restaurants are in the hotels and resorts, but market food is easy to come by for those who don’t mind dining local style.
Popular activities (other than surfing, of course) include island-hopping, sea kayaking and jungle trekking. Pump boats, also known as bancas, can be hired for transportation to islets and remote portions of the coast.
Getting There & Away
Inbound surfers usually land in Manila with board in tow. From here they fly into Cebu City, where they choose land or sea to Surigao. Buses take 2 hours, 30 minutes, while ferries take much longer but have more room for giant pieces of carry-on luggage (like a surf board). From Surigao it is a short boat ride to Dapa, followed by 30 minutes overland to Catangnan.
