If you’re looking for culture and modern cosmopolitan Australia, then steer clear of the tropical tourist trap that is Cairns. Visited primarily as the gateway to the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is a humid backpacker’s paradise overflowing with foam parties and drinks promotions.

Some great trips are offered here however, particularly to the world-famous reef, and often include snorkeling, diving and fishing - don’t expect to relax in splendid isolation as you’ll be surrounded by tourists doing exactly the same thing. The tropical temperatures mean there are all sorts of nasty little beasts about, so keep your eyes open.
