Bulalacao in Oriental Mindoro is a small and fairly uninteresting town, but it is surrounded by gorgeous islands with pristine white-sand beaches. As such, it is trying toestablish a name for itself as a viable alternative to the usual Philippines‘ beach holiday choices such as Boracay, Palawan and Puerta Galera.

The name Bulalacao literally translates as ‘shooting star’ or ‘meteor’ and was given to the island on account of the 13 tiny islands that trail off from its shoreline. Natural beauty is undoubtedly the chief attraction of the town and the aforementioned islands form a major part of this.

The nearby islands are the main draw. Remote, unspoiled and rustic island paradises. Bulalacao still lacks a solid tourist infrastructure. Currently facilities are sparse, but for many visitors this is an integral part of its appeal. Accommodation options are also limited but the opportunity to experience undiluted local culture during a homestay with a local family is a major draw for those wanting to taste authentic Filipino life.

Development is coming, so if you want to get away from it all and live the rustic lifestyle - then get here before it’s gone.

Getting There & Away
