Brunei Muara District Travel Guide

The smallest but most populous of Brunei’s four districts, Brunei-Muara is home to the Sultanate’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. It is the center of government and business, and the most visited district in Brunei. With nearly three quarters of the nation covered by tropical rain forests, Brunei-Muara remains one of the few urban areas navigable by tourists. Rich in history and architectural beauty, the district possesses a number of impressive sights and interesting things to do.

The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque dominates the city center of Bandar Seri Begawan and is one of the most inspiring Islamic mosques in all of Southeast Asia. Completed in 1958, the mosque was constructed using materials imported from around the world; marble from Italy, stained glass from England, granite from China and carpets from Belgium and Saudi Arabia. Although access to the mosque is forbidden to non-Muslims on Thursdays and Fridays, tours can be arranged on other days.

Sometimes known as the ‘Venice of the East,’ the water village of Kampung Ayer is home to some 30,000 people and accessible only by boat or wooden footbridge from the capital. Visitors arrive year round, fascinated by the traditional stilt houses built over the Brunei River, and are welcome to explore the unique, historic community along its maze of interconnected, timber walkways.

Once known as one of the world’s most expensive places to visit, Brunei has recently improved its range of accommodations and eateries. In addition to the high-end hotels, there are now a handful of modestly priced rooms, some guesthouses and even a youth hostel. Outside of the major hotels, which cater to Western culinary tastes at five-star prices, local delicacies at reasonable rates can be found at hawker centers along the river and near Jerudong Park.

Keep in mind that the Sultanate of Brunei is an absolute monarchy and an Islamic nation. While tolerant of visitors, religious laws and customs are strictly enforced and travelers should show respect for these customs. Despite the heat, revealing clothing should not be worn, especially when visiting a mosque, and pointing one’s finger or handling food with the left hand are to be avoided. It is not advisable, under any circumstances, for a foreigner to speak unkindly of the royal family.
