Bongao is the largest city of the autonomous Tawi Tawi Province in the remote southwest of the Philippines and the most appealing settlement in this group of attractive islands for those who fancy a break from the Filipino norm.

The town is good enough for a few days worth of sightseeing although most people use Bongao as a base for visiting the many islands in the region. Simunul, Sibutu, and Sitangkai islands are among the many in the Tawi group and have much to offer such as excellent diving and walking. They also possess stunning natural parks.

Within Bongao itself are many mosques for the majority Muslim populace, along with churches and a Chinese temple. The main street in Bongao, Datu Halun Street, is semi-bustling and features the Town Hall and many eateries. Visitors can either fly to Bongao from Manila or ferry it into the port city from Jolo or Zamboanga City.

Getting There & Away

Bongao has an airport (Sanga-Sanga Airport) with flights from Manila and Zamboanga City, along with a sprinkling of other cities. Flights from Manila take around 90 minutes and jeepneys provide transport to downtown Bongao and hotels. Ferries also come in from Jolo and from Zamboanga City.
